TRACK 7 - "Flower Power" by mr. RAY

Rett girls are like flowers! Growing and
changing in beauty and silence.

Speech/communication:
You can have lots of fun with flowers!
Cut different flowers out of magazines
and have your child "tell" you which
ones to put in the "garden" (green
poster board). When you are done,
she can even tell you who to put in the
garden to enjoy the flowers.

To help learn colors and patterns, cut
flower petals out of felt in different
colors. First, just let your child choose
or name colors. To expand on this,
start a pattern and see if she can "tell"
you which color comes next in the
pattern.

Occupational therapy:
Start a flower from seed in a small pot.
Your child can help you press the seed
into the dirt. Then see if she can
squeeze the trigger of a spray bottle to
water the seed -- or hold a cup/small
watering can and help pour the water.

One ingenious teacher I know hooked
up a water pick (for teeth) to a switch
and had the girls activate the watering
that way!

Sensory:
Time for some hands on time! Get a
big bucket of dirt and hide some plastic
worms in it. Using hands or feet, dig
through the dirt to find the worms.
Siblings will have fun with this too! You
can add all sorts of different textured
objects in the dirt...and if you are
brave, let them feel some cool mud
ooze between their toes and fingers!

If the weather is nice, find a garden to
visit. The sun, breeze, tickley grass
and aroma of earth, flowers and nature
is the ultimate sensory experience.

Physical therapy:
Pretend to be a growing flower. Start
off on the floor with your child and
bring her knees to her chest to
pretend to be a seed. Then slowly
stretch out limb by limb. Then squat to
stand and stretch arms up and out in a
big circle as if blooming.

If you have other people in the room,
have them participate too! They can
start out as seeds....and when your
child "says"  GROW, everyone starts
to grow into a beautiful flower. Don't be
afraid to add in some props!
