Catalina is a smiley, happy 3-year-old. She was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome when she
was 20 months old. She was an easy baby, spoke 7 words, crawled, and even walked
independently 1 week before we received the call about her diagnosis. It was around 13
months when she lost her words overnight and then about a year later she lost most of
her functional hand use. Despite the limitations that she is forced to endure because of
Rett Syndrome, she has many more abilities than disabilities. She can light up a room with
her smile. She loves going around the room making eye contact with those around her.
She communicates with symbols through eyegaze and is working on mastering a
computer communication device. She loves being read to, matches colors, is learning the
alphabet. She is tender, loves her little brother. She stands by him when he is eating,
cries when he cries, looks to us for help when he is unhappy.
Catalina fills her days with developmental therapy, occupational therapy, and speech
therapy in addition to school 2 mornings a week. She works hard with persistence and
with patience I would never expect from a three year old. She fights hard everyday and
she wants us to fight with her – fight to find a cure. Our dream is to have a cure to let
Catalina be free from Rett Syndrome, free to live the life that her mind is capable of but
her body won’t allow.
