Brooklyn is an amazing little girl, she has a smile that can light up the room. Brooklyn was
diagnosed with Rett Syndrome on May 21st 2007, just one week after her second birthday. Rett
Syndrome has taken away many things from our little girl like crawling, talking, and feeding her self
but it has not taken away her loving spirit and infectious giggle.

She truly touches lives everyday and over the past year has worked very hard with therapy. She
currently uses her yes/no cards, communication boards and switches to communicate with us and
works daily on standing and walking. She is our little hero; teaching us about love, joy, patience,
and perseverance. Our lives are full of love because of her.

Brooklyn attends preschool half a day Monday through Friday and loves every second of it. She
also attends Music Together classes with mommy weekly! She has been participating in
therapeutic horseback riding for over a year now and it has become her favorite activity of the
week.

As a family we are dedicated to raising awareness and money for Rett Syndrome research and
know that if we all work together, a cure will be found!

Thank you for taking time to learn a little about Brooklyn! For more stories on our life with Rett
Syndrome please visit our

Helpful Tools for Communication:
Step by step communicator We send this back and forth each day to preschool with messages
recorded on it to promote conversation skills both at home and at school. Brooklyn hits the switch
to begin the conversation.

Yes/No cards Brooklyn's eye gaze is pretty consistent. We made these yes/no cards out of
construction paper and laminated them to make then sturdy. We have about 20 sets and they are
everywhere! We always want to give Brooklyn the opportunity to communicate with us and make
her own choices.

Grooved Communicator This device has allowed us to give her three choices. You can set the
object on the platform and/or place pictures on the device as well. The great thing is that you can
record a message for each item as well. Here is a
video of Brooklyn using this device.

TechTalk: We use this device along with the BoardMaker with Speaking Dynamically Pro for
Brooklyn to communicate with us. It has been helpful to give her lots more choices to talk with us!
She loves telling us what she wants! She is also beginning to use two switch scanning on her
computer to make choices as well, we are SO proud of her!
